Unexpected Experiences of a Vietnam War Veteran
As a Vietnam War veteran, the experiences that unfolded during my service were often far removed from the expectations I and my fellow soldiers had. These narratives not only offer a compelling insight into the challenges faced by combatants but also highlight the unexpected and often harrowing moments that define war. Below are a few of the most unexpected things I experienced during my time in Vietnam, in the hopes that sharing these stories might offer a deeper understanding of the reality of military service.
A Rush to Departure
One particular ordeal stands out vividly in my memory, occurring on the day I was supposed to leave. Late in the afternoon, I received orders to vacate the country. However, my superior, a Major, insisted I complete an important project before I could depart. This delay was critical, as time was running out, and I desperately wanted to leave. The tension was palpable as I packed my duffel bag, urgency in my actions, and the impending nightfall posed an additional risk.
Then, in a twist of fate, a friend informed me that the Major was armed and was actively searching for me, threatening to shoot me if I did not return to the unfinished project. Grasping the severity of the situation, I hastened to the motor pool, only to be taken by the Motormaster Sergeant, who lent me any available vehicle, a forklift, to make my way to Tan Son Nhut Air Base. This encounter serves as a testament to the chaotic and unpredictable nature of life in the field.
The APC Ambush
During the early months of my service, we embarked on a mission requiring an ambush under the cover of night. Our armament for this operation was an armored personnel carrier (APC), but the mission's schedule pushed us to depart late in the day, leaving us vulnerable to enemy detection due to the characteristic noise of the diesel engines. Unfortunately, the enemy was more than willing to exploit this weakness, and as our convoy approached, an ambush was sprung, leading to a terrifying mine detonation that rocked the APC I was on.
The sequence of events that followed was treacherous and complex. The explosion rendered our mission irretrievably altered, as we had to undertake a dangerous recovery operation on a minefield. Fortunately, our military handlers turned to a highly trained and resilient dog team, which, as history would dictate, would not survive this perilous task. amidst this chaos, I found myself in a precarious position, having to rapidly assess the situation and take cover, much to my relief, narrowly avoiding the sniper's shot.
Bullets, as we well known, travel faster than sound, thus my immediate response to the explosion was to take cover. It was a moment of intense gratitude for the divine intervention that kept me safe from harm.
These tales speak to the resilience and bravery of soldiers confronted with unexpected and perilous situations, ever-ready to face the unknown with unwavering resolve and resourcefulness. Each story is a unique chapter in the narrative of the Vietnam War, a time when personal stories and memories provided the most poignant reflections of the era.
Those interested in exploring these stories further may find value in reading the book I have written on the subject, where each episode, from mine explosions to dog team dilemmas, is meticulously detailed.
